A Hundred Serendipities

By: Coby Crosby, ’23

I’d like you to be like these words, you’ll never die.

If you reminisce about it,
you’ll find it doesn’t matter
If we are going to die a day, a week, a month, or years from now,
it matters if we feel alive today
Because each day we live, we save our own life
just some days are harder than others.

You are already strong enough,
because the wars against yourself are the most brutal
And you’ve won a hundred times over.

Anxiety always finds ways to have more anxiety
even presented with everything that could kill it
The unknown always persists so,
you must be just as persistent.
The first step is being brave enough to be present,
because the world was not made for you,
so you must make yourself in this world.

The life we live and the next hundred,
is nothing but a series of plot twists,
and odd turns you cannot expect
So let your happiness be your Serendipity
Let every aspect of life be a double edged sword,
so you are forced to be flexible.

How can you be flexible if you never move a muscle?
How can you grow if you ask for a lighter burden?
How can you be strong if you don’t carry your own feet?
How can you breathe if you bottle your breath?
How can you hear yourself if you never speak?
How can you know yourself if you aren’t yourself?

I try not to have any hate in my heart,
but there is nothing that aches me more than when people neglect their own humanity
You overlook yourself, in my book that’s a sin
Because you can always get accustomed to losing others
But there is no greater pain than losing yourself.

Do not shrink yourself to be more tolerable
Do not silence yourself to be delightful
Do not protect your feelings by hiding their existence

Face the fact that other senses are intensified when you are in the dark
That you understand yourself when you fall to pieces
That it’s okay to bleed out once in awhile to see what you’re made of
That pain is nothing but a singular side effect of being born human
That pain will leave once you’ve made a discovery

It is made to be absorbed,
Not buried, Not bottled, Not hidden
Let every Adversity be your teacher and let the lesson be your Serendipity.

You taught me the strongest things in the world are not diamonds or metal
They are the walls you surround yourself with
That is what breaks my heart a hundred times over
Because there is no greater bitterness than falling out of love, with life

And you have lived for one hundred
A new version, a new name.
A new name, a new existence.
So in each life I will be there to tell you,
you are too amazing to feel nothing at all.

It is the truth because you can’t end something you didn’t finish
Don’t look down when you haven’t seen what the world has to offer tomorrow
And if you think this vitality is cruel,
Tear down your bastion
If you have the strength to build walls to protect yourself,
you easily have the strength to fight what’s outside
Outgrow your fortification that can’t protect you from yourself

Don’t give up, because if the world followed,
there’d be no one left to comfort each other
Your presence has a hundred imprints, your absence will be felt
Memories are precious but do not become one before your time
If you aren’t like these words,
there would be epiphanies left unclaimed, pain procrastinated, and lives left unfinished,

You’ve lived a hundred and you must live a hundred more
Save yourself, over and over
You’ll never die this way.
