Submission Expectations

Are you planning to submit to the JabberWrites Competition? Before submitting your piece, take a look at our checklist below to make sure your writing or art piece meets all the expectations.

Grammar

If you are submitting a writing piece, it must follow the structural rules of the English language. If you need help, then we recommend using a website (like Google Docs) for grammar and spell-checking. You could also book a workshop, but more on that later.

Plagiarism

We prioritize originality and genuine creativity. The purpose of The Jabberwock is to foster and uplift historically marginalized and underrepresented writers and artists. Therefore, please do not take away from others who have put effort and work into their pieces. We check for plagiarism in all genre departments. There will be consequences if we find that someone has plagiarized a writing or art piece, such as:

  • Disqualification from the competition
  • Banning from all departments (Poetry, Fiction, Creative Non-Fiction, Arts Criticism, and Visual Multimedia Art,) in the JabberWrites Competition.
  • Ineligibility to workshop

Content

One of our biggest goals is to showcase the creativity at BLA. In order for your work to be published, please refrain from depicting non-school appropriate themes. Examples of this include profanity, explicit sexual content, and extreme violence. In other words: if you have to consider whether or not something is school appropriate, it probably isn’t school appropriate.

Creativity

BE CREATIVE! We value creativity and providing a platform for students at BLA in order to showcase their creative endeavors. In a place where it may be hard to channel creativity, The Jabberwock is one of many places that can be a creative outlet to you!

Workshop

Optional – Workshops are NOT REQUIRED to participate in the JabberWrites competition. Workshopping is a resource for students to improve their art or writing either for the competition or for separate projects.

Workshop! Workshop! Workshop! If you’re having trouble checking off any of these requirements, then we recommend scheduling a workshop date. Workshops are every Wednesday, after school in Mr. Wu’s room in 324. While workshopping is not required, it is highly recommended! By booking a workshop, you can get immediate feedback on your work from editors and staff of The Jabberwock. We will help you workshop your art or writing piece and help make it magazine-ready for submission!

Now you’re ready to submit!
